Björk x Apple

Icelandic singer-songwriter, Björk, is getting technologically creative her latest collaboration and next musical release. She may be best known for her new wave electronic sound in hits like “Army of Me” and “Hyperballad”, but Björk has showed her range of talent by producing and composing music as well as acting in a few films. She’s won four MTV Music Video Awards, and has been nominated for 13 Grammys and even an Oscar. It may be safe to say the dead swan she wore as a dress in 2001 killed her chances of winning that Oscar, but I guess we’ll never really know.

The wundertwins are back to pushing the boundaries of kitsch and cool with their latest offering; the cigarette ring. This unique two finger ring is forged out of rhodium and ends in an emerald cut ruby, resembling a cigarettes burning ember tip. Let’s be real. Images of smoking are still found everywhere and probably won’t go out of fashion no matter how many ‘Truth’ commercials MTV airs. To avoid flack, they can always claim the ring is simply an homage to Mondrian. Because that never gets old.

In non-fashion week news, as much as we’d like to think winter is finally over, we can’t fool ourselves into totally forgetting snowmaggeddon actually happened. So if you’re still heading up North and are a glutton for punishment, it might be time to invest in a good pair of skiis. Audi Concept Design Munich has teamed up with sporting goods brand Head and the German Ski Association on developing a pair of sleek lightweight (960 grams) skiis, the Audi Carbon Ski.

Derek Lam x Ebay

When Derek Lam booked his creative director position at Tod’s, industry insiders were worried that he simply hadn’t developed his brand’s aesthetic enough to move on to other projects. Well, a few years have passed and Lam has firmly established his finesse in effortless Womenswear, with West Coast classics, somethings suede and luxurious basics as his signature. Now for those of us who can’t manage to frequent his Crosby Street store in NY, the designer has sealed a deal with eBay to produce a special collection. Lam is following in the footsteps of Isaac Mizrahi and Norma Kamali, in their work with Target and Wal-Mart, respectively. But Lam’s collection has a unique twist.

Mubi x Playstation 3

Photo: Playstation Blog

MUBI and Playstation 3 (PS3) are launching a video streaming service in some European countries, Nordic countries, the UK and Australia and New Zealand. We aren’t surprised here in the US, after a crippling descent in sales, Blockbuster Inc. has finally filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy production, a sign that the services like Netflix and video on demand have finally removed the need for the storefront video store, and particularly late fees, unavailable titles, and trying to find parking. Now MUBI and Playstation are hoping to create an online community (are they avoiding the term “social network”?) and capitalize on some of that film lover capital.

Google is reportedly in talks to start a new collaboration with General Motors’ telematic OnStar car service. The Android OS will be integrated into OnStar-enabled vehicles meaning that you’ll finally be able to control your car from your Google-powered smartphone. Why not have Google enter yet another facet of life? But GM is making the right call in investing in technology that will give users the opportunity to experience new levels of convenience and control with Droid phones.

Threadless x Dell

Photos: WWD

There isn’t much left out thete that can’t be customized with a whimsical little decal these days. Dell Computers is collaborating with T-shirt design company Threadless on a series of laptop cover designs, infusing the notebooks with a much needed artistic angle. The partnership is another example of Threadless’ success through crowdsourcing. They’ve accepted submissions from thousands of artists and threadless.com users narrowed them down to 11 designs that will adorn the lids of the Dell Mini or Dell Studio laptop PC.

We’re sure Dell is thinking Threadless designs will give PCs the cool they require to compete with Apple’s cult following, and we wholeheartedly support any collaboration that stands the chance of bringing up and coming artists into the mainstream. Updated designs will be available two to four times a year. Considering we spend enough time deciding if a humorous tee is worth the price, we can’t imagine the time it spent choosing one of Threadless’ eclectic offerings. After all, you can always toss the T-shirt.

London-based designer Zandra Rhodes has been unabashedly working her vibrant psychedelic style through four decades without ever considering turning down the volume. Now Rhodes, with the help of designer Noelle Reno, is channeling her signature style into a diffusion line, Z by Zandra Rhodes, exclusively at Harvey Nichols London. Rhodes has produced nine looks, comprised of easy-to-wear pieces like printed leggings, jersey dresses and tees, all encompassing the designer’s haute-hippie aesthetic.
