Jonathan Saunders x Escada Sport

If you thought the trend of young London designers working with storied fashion houses was going anywhere, think again. First we had Christopher Kane at Versus, then Giles Deacon at Emanuel Ungaro, and now we’re happy to see the collaboration of Jonathan Saunders with luxury brand Escada. Saunders will be designing a capsule collection of about 20 pieces for Escada Sport’s Resort 2012 presentation, including leather accessories.

After declaring bankruptcy, we’ve been waiting on Escada to make a daring move to bring themselves back in the spotlight of editors and buyers, and if recent history is any indication, London-based designers are the way to go. Saunders isn’t new to consultancy (his Pollini collections were some of the brand’s best) but we’re starting to wonder if Saunders, or his contemporaries like Marios Schwab (at Halston) will be able to spread their design skills and still manage to build their own distinct brands. It happened with Alexander McQueen after his stint at Givenchy, but we’re starting to wonder if our new crop of libertines will have the same trajectory, or settle for the easy paycheck. Either way expect something bold from that Escada window.
