Valentino x Gap

While H&M has a history of successful high-low collaborations, it’s not so much the case with the Gap. Other than Stella McCartney’s adorable kids collection and the nearly impossible to find Pierre Hardy shoes, the Gap hasn’t shown much interest or received a warm welcome from luxury designers. That’s why it came as a surprise that Valentino creative directors Maria Grazia Chiui and Pier Paolo Picciolo are working with the Gap on a capsule collection of womenswear this winter. It’s quite obvious that the House of Valentino is trying to work in a little mass appeal for the storied brand, just take a look up at the hemlines of the last few seasons.

Since Valentino Garavani’s departure, the new designers have had a difficult time taking the helm of the house, with a few noted unfavorable collections. But the overall consensus is that they are bringing a youth back to Valentino, which certainly accounts for this new union. According to the designers, the collection “brings together the iconic world of Valentino and Gap’s fashion essentials.” Finally, what we’ve all been waiting for: a synthesis of blue jeans, work-wear, and couture silk chiffon ruffled blouses. Is this an upgrade for the Gap or a downgrade for Valentino? Can’t wait to see the result.
The collection will be sold at Gap’s London flagship and Dover Street Market, Colette in Paris and Gap in Rome and Milan. No plans for a US launch but don’t fret, at the same time the Lanvin x H&M collaboration will be inciting fashion hysteria.
