The real news this week may be that after a tumultuous two years, Barneys New York has finally named former Gucci head Mark Lee as CEO. But the struggling department store’s most charming and visible figure, creative director Simon Doonan, is also in the news with two new collaborations. One with stationery brand Dempsey & Carroll and another with Target. In both instances, the dandy Doonan has contributed his best asset: a never-ending inventory of clever quips. “Battleship Grey is the New Choccie Brown” and “Skinny Jeans are the New Pantyhose” are just a couple of the bon mots Doonan has chosen for his four new designs for Dempsey and Carroll stationery, with a fifth available to let you fill in the blanks.

Etc…

Doonan’s Halloween line for Target, aka “Costume Couture” features kitsch slogans like “Honk If I’m Fierce” for all of the trick or treating witches/fashionistas this October. While Barneys and Doonan are virtually inseparable in our mind, we wonder if Doonan isn’t trying to branch out from luxury retail ending in a split (think Howard Socol/Barneys in 2008). A few more America’s Next Top Model appearances and another book deal, may mean those definitively quirky Christmas window displays may be a thing of the past.

Stationery available now at dempseyandcaroll.com. Look to “Chic or Treat” at Target stores Sept 12th and online at target.com beginning Aug 22nd.
