At this point, the model turned designer is an old trope. Kate Moss ignited the trend with her widely popular collection for Topshop, with Erin Wasson hopping on board a few seasons later for RVCA. Now Jessica Stam is taking the design route with a collaboration with Rachel Roy featuring four pieces for Roy’s lower-priced diffusion line, RACHEL Rachel Roy. Stam tweeted this collaboration months ago to less than stellar reactions. Well Stam has taken the creative helm before, designing a pair of Repetto oxfords (but who hasn’t worked with Repetto these days) and also consulting on Rag & Bone’s Spring 2010 collection.

Stam has lowered her high profile in the past few seasons so we wonder if a design career is her next step. Considering that Kate Moss has been designing out of her closet for years, we don’t see why any model can’t take those for-trade samples and translate them into some cute contemporary offerings. Stam’s line launches at Macy’s this month. We hope this venture moves forward, as four pieces aren’t really excitement inducing. Question is will anyone even notice a new design perspective coming from this diffusion line when it is basically regurgitating itself. They could have kept this one under wraps a bit longer.
