Nikki Six x Kelly Gray

Who says the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree? Kelly Gray, former CEO and creative director of St. John, and daughter to St. John’s founders, has been collaborating with Nikki Sixx of hard rock band Motley Crue on Royal Underground, her line of men’s and women’s casual wear. Gray’s parents founded the conservatively chic St. John back in 1962, so Royal Underground is quite a rebellious departure from managing a world of twinsets and tea-length tweed.

Kelly Gray has always had her eye on a younger market. It was under her control that St. John enlisted the bankable Angelina Jolie for their Spring/Summer 2005 campaign, which helped bring the brand into a younger generation’s wardrobe. Her collaboration with Nikki Sixx has resulted in a collection ranging from cashmere hoodies to rock star staples like distressed jeans and leather jackets. Check out Royal Underground’s latest collection, FW 2010 show below. The collection has its highlights, including some highly wearable pieces featuring sequins and peek-a-boo lace. These looks may not be appropriate for early morning meetings and lunches at Nello but then again, neither is Nikki Sixx. And Kelly Gray doesn’t seem to mind.

Available at select Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdales and Nordstrom stores
