Destination: Portugal x Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)

The Metropolitan Musuem of Modern Art, most widely and affectionately known as simply MoMA, has been providing an escape to some of our favorite countries through their Destination: Design series. Up next is Portugal, launching in May.

Working with such organizations as the Ministry of Culture, Turismo de Portugal, TemaHome, aicep Portugal Global and Fundação de Serralves, the MoMA Design Stores will have a serious selection of products; as serious as a shopping bag that was handmade by inmates at a women’s prison in Lisbon (after the jump). Other products were made by young and emerging designers, offering items that have never been available outside of Portugal. The repurposed furniture, kitchenware, ceramics, jewelry, etc. will be available for a limited time only at MoMA Design Store locations and MoMAstore.org.
The series provides a context for a rich appreciation of ideas, forms, and materials presented from all over the globe. Revenues generated by the Destination: Design series support the programs and exhibitions of The Museum of Modern Art.

MetroPCS customers looking to stand out from the crowd need look no further than to the new MOTO VE440 Handset. Mister Cartoon, one of the most prolific graphic designers and celebrity tattoo artists working today, has teamed up for the second time with the burgeoning wireless communications giant to produce a line of limited edition tattooed mobile phones. Having worked with and on celebrities ranging from George Lopez to Beyonce and Travis Barker, Mister Cartoon’s street cred goes beyond mainstream popularity.

In either a black or chrome finish, the phones feature intricate, traditional tattoo designs in the signature Mister Cartoon style. On top of all the extras included in the phone, “a portion of the revenue generated from the headset sales will go directly to funding community art centers, outreach programs for at-risk youth and art supplies for schools in many of the MetroPCS markets.”

J Brand x Proenza Schouler

On February 17, we saw the first ever addition of hand-painted skinny jeans to the F/W 2010 Proenza Schouler collection and what an addition it was. Combined with their collegiate uniform of updated varsity jackets and dark, blurred plaids, the textured jeans added a youthful, urban vibrancy that Proenza Schouler has been known to deliver season after season. Given the vast number of high-society acolytes to both brands, the commercial viability of this project is inherent. “Everyone we know wears J Brand. It was an easy choice.” said designers Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough.

The duo has consistently produced strong outerwear pieces and accessories but it was refreshing to see how this coupling added a new dimension to the image of the still somewhat formative Proenza Schouler woman. Available at Bergdorf Goodman for $550.

THIS by THAT?

Which former stylist’s assistant to the stars is about to take her first major foray into the fashion universe? She’s managed to hook up with an up and coming denim brand and put her signature style on a few pairs of women’s skinny jeans. We have a feeling this is the beginning of a long career for this mini-dynamo .

Maripol x Marc Jacobs

What do you get when you mix a downtown icon from days of yore with one of the hottest global brands on the market? Apparently some very fun accessories and t-shirts emblazoned with phrases like, “Zebra is IN. Leopard is OUT!” Creative force Maripol, who is best known for working with Madonna well before her Jesus Luz days, has resurrected a few prints from notebooks she kept in the 80’s.
It seems only natural that the woman who was once art director at Fiorucci would choose the Marc by Marc Jacobs store to feature her covetable and wallet-friendly wares. ATTENTION ALL COOL KIDS. Go and get yourself a piece of pop art history.

GE Digital Cameras x Jason Wu

Photo: Slashgear

In a bid to attract a more style conscious crowd, GE has recruited boy wonder Jason Wu (New York based fashion designer) to design a series of point and shoot digital cameras. The top brass at the usually tech-specific General Imaging are hoping to sell these easy to use cameras right alongside other fashion accessories at stores like Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom.  With the ever-growing popularity of style blogs, we have seen a surge in the number of blogger-friendly gadgets flooding the market (Sony bloggie, Apple iPad, etc.) But by tapping a hot, young designer like Jason Wu, GE should be able to grab the attention of the often fickle fashion crowd.

Yestadt Millinery x Vena Cava

Photo: Style.com

For her second collaboration with Vena Cava, Molly Yestadt found the perfect backdrop for her F/W 2010 collection of spaghetti western inspired hats. Vena Cava’s fall woman would not look out of place saddled next to Clint Eastwood in the cult classic film, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly’ or walking down Havemeyer Street in Williamsburg for that matter. This nod to the late 60’s/early 70’s era echoed through each look that went down the runway.
