Paco Rabanne may have been a relic of fashion’s past, relegated to design school libraries and mood boards, but now with the help of Rei Kawakubo, the brand is ready for a relaunch of sorts. The visionary legend behind Comme des Garcons has reinterpreted Rabanne’s iconic chain-mail handbag, the It-bag (before that term crept into our vernacular) of the late 60s, early 70s.
Etc…
The original, only owned by the most steadfast of vintage collectors, was made from re-purposed lavatory chains. Kawakubo’s taken the classic shape and interpreted it in a collection of luxury materials including horn, stingray, metal, suede, and leather. It’s going to take a lot more than a niche collection to revamp this iconic brand, but it’s a start. Ranging from $1,400 to $2,200, this collection will be sold in 2011, exclusively in nine Comme des Garcons stores.
